Family confirmation
His stepdaughter, Asia Agnelli Lagrange, confirmed his death on 3 November, writing: “Sadly, my J has passed away. Today we lost the best man to ever exist. I share this because I know he touched the lives of so many.” She also reposted stories from her half-brother, Frieda's youngest son, Jackson, People reports.

Beginnings
John Frieda was born Alan Howard Frieda on 9 July 1951 in Kenton, Middlesex, People reports. His father was a hairdresser with a salon in Ealing, and his grandfather was a Fleet Street barber. He started working for his father, then trained at the House of Leonard, where he became assistant to Lewis Leonard and took the name John because another Alan already worked there.

1976, the breakthrough year
In 1976 Frieda created the famed Purdey hairstyle, a statement bowl cut for Joanna Lumley after she asked for a schoolboy's haircut for her role in The New Avengers, People reports. That same year, at 25 and with nine years of experience behind him, he opened his own salon in London.

From salon to bathroom shelf
In the 1980s Frieda worked with American haircare executive Gail Federici to create his own product line, launching the fan-favourite Frizz-Ease in 1988, which reached the United States in 1990, People reports. The groundbreaking Sheer Blonde line followed in 1998, and Parade notes Frizz Ease as the brand's best-known product.

The business and the clients
In 2002 Frieda sold the haircare product company to Japanese conglomerate Kao, while retaining his salons — two in London, two in New York and one in Los Angeles, People reports. Among the celebrities who walked through his salon doors were Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Naomi Watts, Madonna, Nicole Kidman and Princess Diana.

Remembered
Tributes reported by LADbible remember him as a mentor and a true legend of the industry: colourist Nicola Clarke called him one of the most influential and wonderful mentors in her life, and salon creative director Cetera Lamb said he led the Mayfair salon for 50 years.
